The Joint Science and Technology Office (JSTO) within the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), has issued a new Request for Prototype Proposals (RPP) through the Medical CBRN Defense Consortium (MCDC). “Increased Micro Sampling to Monitor Immunological Response” (IMMIR) seeks to improve our ability to monitor immune responses to vaccination, which is critical for accelerating vaccine development and armed force readiness.

Solicitation Overview

IMMIR seeks to overcome current limitations in sampling frequency and volume during preclinical vaccine studies, particularly in small animal models, while maintaining compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines. The goal of this RPP is the development of expanded (increased in frequency or continuous), minimally invasive in vivo micro sampling technologies, to allow a more comprehensive assessment of the extended development of the immune response to vaccination. These technologies must integrate with technologies to characterize post-vaccination immune maturation in small animals using small samples of blood, serum, interstitial fluid, or related fluids.

Awardees will be expected to deliver both prototype devices and comprehensive data packages to support regulatory acceptance. The program emphasizes regulatory strategy development and FDA alignment to enable device validation for vaccine monitoring applications. Following successful prototype development, selected projects may be eligible for a follow-on production agreement.

Key Dates

  • Enhanced White Papers are due by July 11, 2025, 12:00 PM ET
  • Awards are expected to begin in November 2025
  • The expected Period of Performance is up to 5 years

Advancing Human Health and Readiness

IMMIR targets a pressing need in defense and public health: enabling more effective vaccine development through enhanced immunological monitoring. The technologies developed through this program could significantly reduce timelines for immunogenicity assessment and ultimately support faster deployment of medical countermeasures for military and civilian populations.
