The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has launched the Emerging Health Innovators (EHI) Initiative, a transformative funding opportunity aimed at empowering early-career researchers and community-based innovators to revolutionize healthcare. To support this initiative, ARPA-H is holding a virtual Proposer’s Day on January 8th, 2025, from 11AM to 4PM EDT.
Overview of Solicitation
The EHI Initiative seeks to foster innovation at the intersection of technology, community engagement, and healthcare. By offering tailored support to early-career scientists and community innovators, ARPA-H aims to catalyze advancements in health equity, technology, and biomedical research. Additional goals of the EHI initiative include: supporting early-career health innovators/performers; fostering health innovators engaging in community health research; and engaging untapped performers to work with ARPA-H. The EHI initiative will have two application tracks with unique topic areas:
- Technology-Driven Innovation:
Designed for early-career investigators at academic or research institutions. This track encourages proposals in:- LS-SAFE: The Lymphatic System’s Role in Infectious Disease Makes Us SAFE via Surveillance, Activation, Fluid Return, and E This topic will explore gaps in knowledge at the intersections of the immune, circulatory, and lymphatic systems.
- Advanced Computational Platform for Allogenic Human Leukocyte Antigen-Matching: Tis topic concentrates efforts across AI, database management, and donor/transplantation groups to develop an application to provide clinical decision support for matching transplantation recipients with a donor, with the goal of lowering the risk of Graft vs. Host Disease.
- Community-Centered Innovation:
Proposals on this track should be led by community innovators, such as healthcare workers, social workers, and nonprofit leaders (potentially in partnership with an academic or research institution), that utilize community-engaged research methods to develop innovative technologies. This track supports proposals for one of the following two topics:- Disrupting Asthma: Empowering community-based organizations to deliver personalized and effective asthma management for children. This topic aims to support proposers to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and innovation behind novel asthma management approaches in communities they serve.
- Community Care for Personal Well-Being: Empowering community-based organizations to leverage technology for personalized environmental monitoring and recommendations. This topic aims to improve localized environmental recommendations with the use of wearables and virtual assistants.
Awards are capped at $350,000 per year for up to two years, with an optional third year of funding based on project performance and scalability.
Proposer’s Day
The goal of the Proposer’s Day is to provide an overview of ARPA-H’s vision for the Initiative, give opportunities for potential proposers to identify possible team members in an organic format, and offer potential proposers the chance to give a 5-minute, 1-slide lightning talk on their relevant interests and capabilities. Interested parties are also encouraged to submit a “teaming profile” to the ARPA-H Solutions Portal, which will describe the technical, teaming, and research capabilities of the submitting individual or team as they relate to the Initiative. While participation in the virtual Proposer’s Day for EHI is not required for proposal submission, this event was designed maximize benefits to potential proposers.
