Summary

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is prioritizing the security and robustness of artificial intelligence (AI) in military applications with the Securing AI for Battlefield Effective Robustness (SABER) initiative. SABER aims to establish AI red teams that can operationally assess AI-enabled battlefield systems against potential adversarial threats.

Initiative Overview

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is prioritizing the security and robustness of artificial intelligence (AI) in military applications with the Securing AI for Battlefield Effective Robustness (SABER) initiative. SABER aims to establish AI red teams that can operationally assess AI-enabled battlefield systems against potential adversarial threats.

Why AI Security Matters for the Battlefield

AI is rapidly transforming military operations, offering advantages such as faster decision-making, enhanced autonomy, and assistive automation. However, these systems are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, including:

  • Data poisoning – Manipulating training data to degrade AI performance.
  • Adversarial patches – Subtle physical modifications that deceive AI models.
  • Model stealing – Extracting AI capabilities to replicate or manipulate them.

While these threats have been evaluated in controlled environments, their impact on operational battlefield AI remains largely unknown. The SABER program’s goal to evaluate AI-enabled autonomous ground and aerial systems on a representative battlefield will ensure the U.S. military remains prepared against any and all threats.

SABER Proposers Day

To facilitate engagement with researchers, industry leaders, and innovators, DARPA is hosting a SABER Proposers Day on March 12, 2025. This hybrid event will introduce potential participants to SABER’s mission and technical objectives and provide opportunities for collaboration.

  • Date: March 12, 2025
  • Location: Hybrid (In-person: Arlington, VA & Virtual via Zoom)
  • Registration: SABER Proposers Day (deadline for registration is February 25, 2025 at 5PM ET

SABER encourages teaming efforts among researchers and industry partners. Potential proposers can opt-in to share contact details during registration to foster collaboration. Additionally, resources such as DARPAConnect provide guidance on navigating DARPA solicitations.

The Future of Secure AI in Defense

SABER represents a critical investment in securing military AI systems. As AI becomes more integrated into defense operations, ensuring its robustness against adversarial threats is essential. Through proactive AI red teaming, SABER will help DARPA anticipate, assess, and mitigate risks, ensuring that AI remains a force multiplier rather than a vulnerability on the battlefield.
